KABERAMAIDO DISTRICT
Kaberamaido, UGANDA
BACKGROUND
The country of Uganda has suffered
under the violence of war for many
years. Thousands have been killed
and young children have been
abducted and used as soldiers in
the rebel LRA (Lord’s Resistance
Army). As the civil war begins to show
signs of ending many people are
beginning to return to their homes to
try to rebuild their communities. One
such area is Kaberamaido District.
Home to over 100,000 people this
district has shared in the losses of
the war. Thousands were displaced.
Children were abducted by the LRA
and have never been seen again.
From 2004 to 2007 the District
recruited over 2,000 young people
including boys and girls to form a
militarily trained defense force known
as the Arrow Boys. After its formation
this group managed to protect and
prevent further LRA incursions into
their land. In 2007 this group was
disbanded. While the threat from the
outside diminished, the threat of
having hundreds of youth with little
education and little opportunities for
work, has increased the risk of
problems. Local leaders are
extremely motivated to provide their
children with a brighter future. Also, due to war and the spread of HIV/AIDS, there are hundreds of widows in great need. Due to the extreme poverty of the region, hundreds of children are not in school. Many churches in the region are trying to assist their needy communities, but are lacking basic resources. We hope to come alongside these groups to better enable their ministries. We plan to assist a widows group in Otuboi sub-county, the Arrow Boys in Alwa sub-county, and youth and church leaders in Kaberamaido District.
DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT
Widows
Objective: Assist widows in Otuboi sub-county of Kaberamaido District by helping them to send the children under their care to school in the short-term and enabling them to independently care for themselves and their family over the long-term by providing agriculture training, farm implements and spiritual encouragement. We will do this by providing exercise books and writing utensils for the widows’ children to enable them to go to school, and by providing an initial group of ten widows with training on cultivation of vegetables and citrus and on financial management. We will also provide seeds, tools and other implements for the widows to use in planting their gardens.
Arrow Boys
Objective: Assist an initial group of ten Arrow Boys (including two women) by helping them generate income by providing them with seeds, tools and other farm implements to grow maize, cassava and other crops in the short-term, while also enabling them to care for their
family and sustain income-generation over the long-term by providing training in citrus and other non-traditional crops. We will also encourage and help them to save money earned from the sale of crops to put toward the purchase of additional implements.
Youth
Objective: Assist the youth of Kaberamaido by
encouraging them to develop a vision of God’s
plan for their life; providing them with training on
character development and mentorship; and
providing opportunity for sport, recreation and
Bible camp activities. In 2009, we hosted a team
of students from the U.S. in leading sports camp
and Bible camp activities for youth at the local
orphanage and led a conference for 100
secondary school students in Kaberamaido
district on themes of Christian character development and developing a life vision.
Church Leaders
Objective: Provide Bible teaching and spiritual encouragement for pastors and other church leaders from across Kaberamaido district by organizing conferences for 75 church leaders and providing Bibles and other books and materials on spiritual leadership, stewardship,
HIV/AIDS, youth ministry, etc.
